2.3 Not only A but (also) B「ＡだけでなくＢも」←重点はＢにある！！(堅)
She is not only beautiful but also intelligent. 彼女は美しいばかりでなく聡明でもある。
He not only gave me a lot of advice, but also lent me some money.
彼は私にたくさんアドヴァイスをしてくれただけでなくいくらかのお金も貸してくれた。

“not only”を強調のために文頭に持ってくることができる。
その場合、以下の部分は疑問文と同様の倒置（助動詞＋S＋V）が生じる。
Not only do they need clothing, but they are also short of water.
彼らは衣服を必要としているだけではなく、水もまた不足していた。
動詞の一致のさせかた(呼応）
(not only A but also) B と考え、Ｂに合わせる。
Not only were the pupils laughing but also the teacher. 生徒たちばかりでなく教師も笑っていた。
2.4 A as well as B「Ｂと同様にＡも」「ＢばかりでなくＡも」←重点はＡにある！！
＝not only B but also A
He gave me clothes as well as money. 彼は私にお金だけでなく服もくれた。
= He gave me not only money but also clothes.
動詞の一致のさせかた(呼応）
A (as well as B)と考え、Ａに合わせる。
Her sons as well as her daughter are in college. 彼女の息子たちも、娘と同様に、大学にいっている。
2.5 Either A or B 「ＡかＢのどちらか」
I have to learn either Chinese or Russian.私は中国語かロシア語のどちらかを学ばなければならない。
動詞の一致のさせかた(呼応）
ＡとＢのどちらか一方に比重があるわけでないので、動詞に近い方の主語に一致させる。
Either you or I am to go. 君か私のどちらかが行かねばならぬ。
2.6 Neither
2.6.1 neither A nor B「ＡでもなくＢでもない」 （neither ＝ n[否定] ＋ either）
She can neither sing nor dance. 彼女は歌うことも踊ることもできない。
ＡとＢのどちらか一方に比重があるわけでないので、動詞に近い方の主語に一致させる。
動詞の一致のさせかた(呼応）
Neither his parents nor his brother were present at the wedding.
彼の両親も彼の兄も結婚式には出席しなかった。
2.6.2 否定を含む文に”neither/nor＋助動詞＋S”の形が続き、
「Sもまた…ない」という意味になることがある。
Ruth didn’t turn up, nor (neither) did Kate. ルースは現れず、そしてケイトもまた現れなかった。
2.7 Both A and B「ＡとＢの両方」
This soap is both cheap and (of) good quality. この石鹸は安くて良質だ。
I want to learn both English and French. 私は英語とフランス語を両方学びたい。
動詞の一致のさせかた(呼応）
実質的な内容がＡ＋Ｂなので、動詞もそれに準ずる。
Both he and his wife like it. 彼の妻も彼もそれが好きだ。
Both Tom and I were absent. トムと私の両方が欠席した。
2.8 接続を表す副詞
2.8.1 …, too 肯定文 「もまた～（ある）」…,
I can read English, and he can read it, too. 私は英語を読めるがまた、彼も読むことが出きる。
= I can read English, so can he.
2.8.2 either 否定文 「…もまた～（ない）」…
I can’t speak French, and I cannot speak Spanish, either.
私はフランス語を話せないし、またスペイン語も話せない。
= I can’t speak French, neither (nor) can I speak Spanish.
2.8.3 and yet 「それにもかかわらず」(フォーマル)
He is poor, and yet he is proud. 彼は貧しい、にもかかわらす気位が高い。
2.8.4 still, but still 「それでもやはり」
He is poor; still he is happy. 彼は貧しい、しかしやはり幸福だ。
He is dishonest, but still he has something nice left in him.
彼は不正直だ、だがやっぱり、どこかによいところが残っている。
2.8.5 nevertheless 「がしかし、それにもかわらず」
Everybody envied him; nevertheless, he was not happy.
