2.1 仮定法過去 ( Subjunctive Past )

2.3 were to, should を用いた表現（仮定法未来）
2.3.1 If＋主語＋were to＋原形，＋…would etc.＋原形… (古い言い回し)
2.3.2 If＋主語＋should ＋原形不定詞，＋…will ( would ) etc.＋原形… (英国のみ)
2.1 仮定法過去 ( Subjunctive Past )
If … 過去 …，＋… would ( should, could, might ) ＋ 原形…. （be動詞はwere）
現在の事実に反する仮定、または可能性の低い想像を表す。過去形にすることによって現実と遊離して、ありえない状況を表している。
2.1.1 一般動詞の仮定法過去
If I knew his address, I would write to him.
≒ As I don’t know his address, I won’t write to him. （現在の事実）
彼の住所を知っていれば、彼に手紙を書くのだが。
If I had another million yen, I could buy that car.
≒ Because I don’t have another million yen, I can’t buy that car.
もし、もう１００万円あったら、あの車を買えるのになあ。
If you helped me with my work, I might get you a drink.
≒ You don’t help me with my work, so I may not get you a drink.
もし君が私の仕事を手伝ってくれたら、きみに一杯おごってやるかもしれないのに。
It would be better if you took my advice. 君が私の忠告に従ってくれたらいいのに。
2.1.2 be動詞の仮定法過去
be動詞は人称・数に関係なくwereを使うのが原則であるが、口語ではwasが使われることもある。
If I were a bird, I would fly to you. もしも私が鳥なら、君のところに飛んでいくのだが。
≒ I am not a bird, so I can’t fly to you. （現在の事実）
If I were/was youは助言をする時の表現
If I were/was you, I would go by public transportation.
もし私が君なら、公共の交通機関を使って行くだろうに。
I 英shouldn’t [米：wouldn’t] worry if I were you.もし私が君なら、悩まないな。
2.1.3 if節にcanのある仮定法過去
助動詞canを過去形にして、原形の動詞が続く
If I could play the piano, I would compose touching songs.
≒ As I can’t play the piano, I can’t compose touching songs.（現在の事実）
もしピアノが弾けたなら、感動的な歌を作曲するのだが。
2.1.4 if節にwouldのある仮定法過去 would~, if ~would/could
丁寧な要求の際、if節の中にwouldを入れる。
If you 動詞の現在形→If you will ～→if you would～の順に丁寧
We would appreciate it if you would/could be so kind as to let us have some more time.[堅]
もう少し時間の余裕をいただけたらありがたいのですが。
2.2 仮定法過去完了 ( Subjunctive Past Perfect )
If … had+過去分詞 …，＋… would (should, could, might ) ＋ have +過去分詞….
過去の事実に反する仮定・想像を表す。過去完了にすることによって、過去と遊離して、ありえない状況を表す。
2.2.1 仮定法過去完了の基準形
If you had followed my advice, you would not have failed.
≒As you didn’t follow my advice, you failed.
もしも君が私の忠告に従っていたならば、君は失敗しなかったでしょう。
If she’d run a bit faster, she could have won.
≒ As she didn’t run a bit faster, she couldn’t win.
もし、彼女がもうちょっと早く走っていたならば、彼女は勝てたでしょうに。
If I hadn’t been so tired, I could have realized(英 realised) what was happening.
≒ As I was so tired, I couldn’t realize what was happening.
もし、私がそんなに疲れていなかったならば、何が起きているか理解できたのに。
2.2.2 if節が仮定法過去完了 帰結節が仮定法過去
If…had＋過去分詞…，＋… would (should, could, might ) + 原形….
条件節が過去の事実に反する事を表し、帰結節が現在の事実の反対の状況を表す。
If Nancy had not broken her leg yesterday, she would be skating here now.
=Nancy broke her leg yesterday, so she isn’t skating here now.
ナンシーは足を骨折しなかったなら、いまごろここでスケートをしているだろう。
通例、帰結節にはnow, still, at presentなどの現在を表す副詞・副詞句を伴う。
2.2.3 if節が仮定法過去 帰結節が仮定法過去完了
条件節が現在の事実に反することを仮定し、帰結節が過去の事実の反対の状況を表す。
If he were not a millionaire, he could not have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Red Cross.もし、彼が大金持ちでなかったら，赤十字に何十万ドルも寄付できなかっただろう。
2.3 were to, should を用いた表現（仮定法未来）
未来の実現可能性が比較的低い仮定を表す。「万一～なら、…だ」
If 主語＋were to＋原形，…would (should, could, might)＋原形….
①If 主語＋should ＋原形不定詞，…will[would], shall＋原形…
= ②if主語＋(should) happen to ～, …will[would], shall＋原形…
※①は現在、あまり使われません
2.3.1 If＋主語＋were to＋原形，＋…would etc.＋原形… (古い言い回し)
If the sun were to rise in the west, I would not change my mind.
もし太陽がたとえ西から昇るとしても、私は決心を変えません。
If I were to die tomorrow, I would never forget your kindness.
仮に明日死んでも、私は決してあなたの親切を忘れません。
※この言い回しは、婉曲な提案にも使う。
If you were to tell in more detail, we could extend a helping hand.
もしあなたがもうちょっと詳細に話してくれたら、私たちは救いの手を差し伸べる事が出来るのに。
2.3.2 If＋主語＋should ＋原形不定詞，＋…will ( would ) etc.＋原形… (英国のみ)
were to が純然たる仮定法であるのに対し、should は単なる解放条件である場合も多く、帰結節には過去形の助動詞だけではなく、現在形の助動詞が用いられたり命令文になったりする場合も多い。
If his father should die, he will have to live on his own.
もし彼の父が死んだら、彼は自分で生きていかなければならないだろう。
米：If his father dies, ~
If Thomson should call me up, tell him he can come at any time.
もしトマソンが電話をしてきたら、いつ来てもいいと言ってください。
米：If Thomson calls me up, ~
should の代用として、happen to あるいは should happen to が使われることもある。
If you happen to meet him, perhaps you could get some useful information.
もしたまたま君が彼と出会ったら、恐らく役に立つ情報が得られるだろう。
If you should happen to finish your homework early, please help me with mine.
万一早く宿題が終ったら、私のを手伝って。
