7.2 if it were not [ had not been ] for～ 「～がなければ、～がなかったならば」

7.3 as it were [いわば] ＝ so to speak 文中、文尾に置かれる
7.4 would rather
7.4.1 would rather [sooner] ～ than … 「（…するくらいなら）～したほうがましだ」

7.4.3 I’d rather that-節（that-節は仮定法）「～してもらいたいのに」= I wish
7.5 had better～原形不定詞 ～したほうがよい 否定形 had better not～
7.6 If only + 仮定法…で「…しさえ[でありさえ]すればいいのに」= I do wish…

7.1.2 as if [ though ] 仮定法過去完了 [あたかも～した/～だった ように]
He looks as if he had come across a psychic phenomenon.
まるで心霊現象に遭遇したかの様な顔をしている。

まるで心霊現象に遭遇したかのような顔をしていた。
7.1.3 as if 直説法 [～らしい]
She is walking briskly as if she doesn’t know where she is heading for.
彼女はどこへ行くつもりかわからない様子で足早に歩いている。
7.2 if it were not [ had not been ] for～ 「～がなければ、～がなかったならば」
= without～
a. If it were not for～ 「～がなければ」
b. If it had not been for～ 「～がなかったならば」
7.2.1 Without your help, I could not do it.
= If it were not for your help, I could not do it.
もしも君の助けがなければ、それをすることは出来ないのだが。
≒ If you did not help me, I could not do it.
7.2.2 Without your help, I could not have done it.
= If it had not been for your help, I could not have done it.
もしも君の助けがなかったならば、それをすることは出来なかったのだが。
≒If you had not helped me, I could not have done it.
注：Without=But for は受験で勉強した決まり文句だが、ほとんど使われないから注意。
またWere it not for~, Had it not been for~も古すぎる表現で、使われない。
7.3 as it were [いわば] ＝ so to speak 文中、文尾に置かれる
The U.N. should make strenuous efforts to break down the barriers, as it were, of poverty.
いわば貧困という障害を取り除くために、国連はたゆまぬ努力をするべきである。
7.4 would rather
7.4.1 would rather [sooner] ～ than … 「（…するくらいなら）～したほうがましだ」
I would rather remain poor than deal in illegal things.
違法なものを取引するくらいなら貧乏のままでよい。
7.4.2 would rather (not)～ 「～したい（～したくない）」
I’d rather stay home (than go out). どちらかというと(外出するよりは)家にいたい。
We’d rather not wake a sleeping dog. 私達は寝ている犬を起こすようなことはしたくない。
Cf. wake a sleeping dog 《諺》事を荒立てる、藪をつついて蛇を出す
7.4.3 I’d rather that-節（that-節は仮定法）「～してもらいたいのに」= I wish
I’d rather you didn’t visit me this week. 今週は君に訪問してもらいたくない。
I’d rather he had not told me the truth. 彼には、真実を言ってもらいたくはなかったのに。
7.5 had better～原形不定詞 ～したほうがよい 否定形 had better not～
I’d better go now.
私はもう失礼したほうがよい。
I think you’d better not be too nervous about your school record.
あまり学校の成績に神経質にならないほうがよいと思うよ。
Hadn’t we better mind our own business?
他人の事には口出ししない方が良いのではないか。
We had better take a wait-and-see attitude, hadn’t we?
静観の姿勢をとるのが一番いいのではないでしょうか。
＊ had better は聞き手に押し付ける言い方でI thinkをつけて和らげるほうがよい。主語が一人称以外の時には命令、忠告の意味になる。また、may as well～は相手に強制しない言い方。
＊ had better ～≒ It would be better for～to不定詞
You had better study now. ≒ It would be better for you to study now.
7.6 If only + 仮定法…で「…しさえ[でありさえ]すればいいのに」= I do wish…
通常、帰結節がなくif節だけを独立して用いる。（仮定法3-3に重複）
7.6.1 If only+仮定法過去 現在に対する願望
If only I were (was) charming! 私がチャーミングでありさえすればな。
If only I had money. 金がありさえすればなあ。
If only you could be near me. 君が私のそばにいればなあ。
7.6.2 If only 主語＋would＋動詞の原形 未来・現在に対する願望
If only the rain would stop! 雨が止んでさえくれればなあ。
If only they would stop talking, I could concentrate on my work.
彼らがおしゃべりを止めてさえくれば、ぼくは仕事に集中出来るのだがなあ。
7.6.3 If only + S1 + had + N 過去に対する後悔
If only I had left the office ten minutes earlier. あと10分早くオフィスを出てさえいればなあ。
If only you had gotten up earlier this morning like you were supposed to.
あなたは、今朝もっと早く起きるべきだったのに。
7.7 It is time～+仮定法過去「～してもよいころだ」≒ It is time for＋人＋to-不定詞
timeの前にabout, highがつくこともある。
It is time you went to bed, John. ≒ It is time for you to go to bed, Jon.
ジョン、そろそろ寝る時間だよ。
I think it’s about time I was leaving. [wasが普通]そろそろ失礼します。
It was high time they arrived at a conclusion. 彼らが結論に達してもいいころだった。
8. ifに代わる語句
Suppose [supposing] (that), provided (that), imagine, as [so] long as, in case, unless, on the condition that（仮定法と共に使わない表現もあるので注意）
Suppose [Supposing] you won the million dollar lottery, what would you do first?
もし、百万ドルの宝くじに当選したら、最初に何をするのでしょうか。（仮定法）
We will have days off provided we work on weekends.
土日に働けば、私達は休みを取ることができる。 （直説法）
In case it rains, I always take a folding umbrella.
雨が降るといけないから、私は常に折り畳み傘を携帯しています。
Cf. in case はイギリスでは「～だといけないから、～の場合に備えて」の意味になる。

Patients at this hospital can go out on the condition that they return by four.
