3.1 許可 ～してもよい （あらたまった言い回し）
3.1.1 許可のmay＝be allowed [ permitted ] to [堅]
3.1.2 許可要求 can/could よりフォーマルな言い方。
3.2 推量 ～かもしれない
3.2.1 現在の推量 may 「～かもしれない」might>may>could
3.2.2 現在の推量might 「ひょっとしたら～かもしれない」
3.2.3 否定形 may not 「～でないかもしれない」
3.2.4 間接話法で主節が過去の時、従属節中のmayはmightになる
3.3 may have p.p. / might have p.p

May/Might の意味は二つに大別できる
許可すること/許可を求めること 「～してもよい」 過去形はない(mightの形は時制の一致にあらわれるだけで「～してもよかった」の意味はない)
可能性 ～かもしれない 過去形 may have p.p.
3.1 許可 ～してもよい （あらたまった言い回し）
イギリス英語では、多少フォーマルだが、使ってもおかしくない。アメリカ英語では、かなり
堅苦しい言い方となり、canを使うことが多い。多少丁寧な表現でもcouldが使われる。
may > could > can （丁寧度）
疑問文とその答え方
May I go swimming in the river? -- Yes, you may. / No, you may not [must not].
川で泳いでもよろしいですか。 ええ、泳いでもよい。（許可） いいえ、いけません。（禁止）
（注）許可の意味のmayの否定にはmust notが用いられ「…してはならない」と強い禁止を 表すが、「…してはならない」という不許可の意味ではmay notも用いられる。これらは、やや高圧的な言い方なので、口語ではcannot を用いることが多い。
Yes, you may. / No, you may not.は目上の人に使うと失礼にあたるので、次のような答え方をすべき。
・許可するとき
Yes, please. /Yes, certainly. /Yes, of course. /Why not?
・不許可
No, please don't. /I'm sorry, but you can't. /I'm afraid not.
3.1.1 許可のmay＝be allowed [ permitted ] to [堅]
許可のmayが、他の他動詞について未来形・完了形に用いられるときにはbe allowed
[ permitted ] toが代用される。また、過去の許可に使われる。(mightは使わない)
You will be allowed [permitted] to go home next month. 来月は帰宅を許されるでしょう。
He was allowed [permitted] to meet the Queen. 彼は女王にあうことを許された。
3.1.2 許可要求 can/could よりフォーマルな言い方。
May I turn on the TV? (BrE & AmE) テレビつけてもいい？
Mightはほとんど使われない。[フォーマル]
Might I speak to Mrs. Lutterworth? ラターワース夫人とお話しできますでしょうか。
3.2 推量 ～かもしれない
3.2.1 現在の推量 may 「～かもしれない」might>may>could
He may be a genius. 彼は天才かもしれない。
We may go climbing in the Alps next summer.
私たちは次の夏アルプス山脈にのぼるかも知れない。
'Where's Emma?' 'I don't know. She may be out.'
「エマはどこ？」「さぁ。買い物にでかけているのかもしれないわ。」
注意：推量のmayは疑問文には使われない。
The plane may be late. 飛行機は遅れるかも知れない。
↓疑問文にする
Do you think the plane will be late? 飛行機は遅れそうですかね？
Is it likely that the plane will be late? Is the plane likely to be late?
注意：否定の疑問文には使われるが、かなり堅いイメージになる
May we not be making a big mistake?
私たちはひょっとして大きな過ちは犯していないかもしれませんか。
3.2.2 現在の推量might 「ひょっとしたら～かもしれない」
本来は仮定法の用法で、mayに比べて実現の可能性が低いことを示す。
may とmightはどちらも現在又は未来について使われる。
I may go to London tomorrow. 私はロンドンに行くかもしれない。[50%の可能性]
Joe might come with me. ジョーは私についてくるかもしれない。[30%の可能性]
It might be better to be on your guard. 用心したほうがいいかもしれないよ。
Who might you be? いったいどなた様でしょうか。《通例おどけ・皮肉を表す》
If you went to bed for an hour, you might feel better.
一時間寝たら、ひょっとすると気分がよくなるかも知れない。
直説法過去時制で「…してもよかった」「…かもしれなかった」の意味で用いることは今ではまれです。
3.2.3 否定形 may not 「～でないかもしれない」
＜may/might not とcannot /can'tの違い＞ 訳に注意
may/might not = It is possible that…not….
cannot / can't = It is not possible that….
It may not be true. = It is possible that it is not true. それは本当ではないかもしれない。
It can't be true. It is not possible that it is true. それは本当であるはずがない。
3.2.4 間接話法で主節が過去の時、従属節中のmayはmightになる
Ann says “I may go to Scotland at/on the weekend.
↓ アンは週末にスコットランドに行くかもしれないと言う。
Ann said that she might go to Scotland at/on weekend.
3.3 may have p.p. / might have p.p
3.3.1 過去の推量 may/might have＋過去分詞 「～だったかもしれない」
過去において起きた可能性があることを表す
= It is possible that S+過去形または現在完了形
I may/might have met him somewhere but I can’t remember.
= It is possible that I met him somewhere but I can’t remember.
私は彼にどこかで会ったかもしれないが思い出せない
‘Polly’s very late.' 'She may/might have missed her train.'
「ポリーは大遅刻だね」「電車に乗り損ねたかもしれないね。」
3.3.2 過去の推量might have p.p. 「ひょっとしたら～したかもしれない」
何かが起きた可能性があるが、実際起きていないことを表す。
Stop thinking about what you might have been.
過去にあったらよかったのにと思うことをやめなさい。
If she hadn’t been so bad-tempered, I might have married her.
もし彼女がそんない怒りっぽくなかったら、彼女と結婚したかもしれない。
3.3.3 現在・未来の推量の may/might have p.p.
I’ll try phoning him, but he may/might have gone out by now.
彼に電話してみよう、でも今頃外出してしまっているかもしれない。
By the end of the year, I might have saved some money.
年末までに、お金を貯めているかもしれない。
3.4 may/ might を使った特殊表現
3.4.1 may (well) /might ….but「…かもしれないが～」
議論の中で、mayは'although' に似た働きをする。すなわち、主な主張に大切でない事実を言って本
に導入する際に用いる。
It may sound true, but it’s false.
= Although it sounds true, it’s false.
それは本当に聞こえるかもしれないが、うそなのです。
It may (well) be a comfortable car, but it uses a lot of petrol（米 gas）.
= Although it is a comfortable car, it uses a lot of petrol.
それは快適な車であるが、大量のガソリンを消費する。
He may (well) be clever, but he hasn't got much sense. 彼は賢いが、常識がない。
You might think I am cruel, but business is business.
私を冷酷と思うかもしれないが、商売は商売だ。
＜考え方＞wellという副詞が助動詞mayを補強していると考えられる。
well ¬¬= probably であるからmay well = may probably になり、wellによって高い可能性を示すよう
になった。
3.4.2 may/might 容認 「～してさしつかえない」 容認のmayの否定は「cannot」
Life may be compared to a voyage. 人生は航海にたとえてもよかろう。 [書]
The man might be called a hooligan/roughneck. あの男のことを悪党と呼んでもよかろう。
3.4.3 may 一般事実 [書]
mayは、ある状況で起こりうる典型的な出来事について話すときに用いる。特に、科学や学術の文脈
でよく目にする。
After having a baby, a woman may suffer from depression for several months.
妊娠すると、女性は数ヶ月間憂鬱な状態（つわり）に苦しむことが多い。
The flowers may have five or six petals; color may range from light pink to dark red.
その花には５枚又は６枚の花びらがあり、色は薄いピンクから濃い赤までに及ぶ。
Children of divorced parents may have difficulty in forming stable relationships themselves.
離婚した親の子供は、安定した親族関係を形作るのに苦労するものだ。
3.4.4 Might 特にlikeやwantの動詞を伴って、丁寧で間接的な助言・提案を表す。
I won’t go any further with it now, but you might like to take a copy of it out with you.
今は先に進まないで置きますが、コピーを取っていったらよいですよ。
3.4.5 非難
You might at least say thank you. 少なくとも「ありがとう」くらい言ってもいいのに。
They might have cleaned up before they left. 帰る前に掃除してくれてもよかったのに。
3.4.6 Might I say/ask/add etc. [英] 丁寧に情報を加えたり、話を遮る
Might I ask how old you are? おいくつかを伺ってもよろしいでしょうか。
Might I say how lovely it is to see everyone here today.
今日ここで皆さんにお会いして何とうれしいかを言いたい。
3.4.7 I might say/add 言っていることを強調する
I was, I might say, not surprised. 私は驚いていないと言いたい。
3.4.8 might have known/suggested etc. 状況に対して驚かないことを言う
I might have known I’d get no sympathy from my family.
家族からまったく同情してもらえないのは知っていた。
3.5 might / may as well～「～（しないより）するほうがいいだろう」
3.5.1 Might/May as well + present Verb
（別に～してもいいんじゃない？）もしくは「〜しない理由がない」。一般的に、”might”と”may”のどちらを用いてもいいが、”might”のほうがよく使われる。
”may”は提案がポシティブなニュアンスを含む場合に用いられる場合が多いが、”might”はネガティブなニュアンスが含まれる場合もしくは中立的な状況で用いられることが多い。
You might as well see a dentist. 歯医者に見てもらったほうがいいだろう。
この文はYou might as well see a dentist ( as not).の省略と考えられ、「歯医者にみてもらわないよりは見てもらったほうがよい」という意味。
There's nobody interesting to talk to. We might as well go home.
面白い人が誰もいない。我々は家に帰ったほうがよい。
This food’s about to go off (U.S.: bad). You might as well give it to the dog.
この食べ物はそろそろ腐るから、犬にやった方がいい。
You don’t have to work tomorrow, so you may as well enjoy yourself.
明日は仕事ないから、別に楽しんでもいいんじゃない？
None of your students have turned up today; so, you might as well go home.
今日は生徒誰も来ていないから、帰ったほうがいいだろう。
I’ve got nothing else to do; so, I might as well wash the car.
他にやることないから、洗車でもしたほうがいいだろう。
It’ll take a while to get to our destination; so, you may as well get some sleep.
目的地まではまだ時間がかかるから、少し寝た方がいいんじゃない？
It’s only half a mile from here. So, we might as well walk.
ここから半マイルしかかからない。だから、歩いた方がいいだろう。
Pretty much everyone is here, so we may/might as well start the meeting now.
殆ど皆が集まっていますので、会議はもう始めた方がいいでしょう。
We might as well try to finish this report tonight; it’ll only take another 30 minutes.
30分ぐらいしかかからないから、この作文を終わらして方がいいだろう。

3.5.2 might as well be ＋ Present Prog/Present Perfect Prog~ (修辞・皮肉) おおげさに
If I had been speaking Mongolian, I wouldn’t have been understood any less.
→I might as well have been speaking Mongolian. （皮肉）
向こうは私が言っていることが全く理解できず、まるで私がモンゴル語を喋っていたようなものだった。

May you be happy! = I hope you will be happy. 幸あらんことを。
May you return home safe! ご無事で帰ってきますように。
May you rot in hell!! 地獄で腐れ！
3.6.2 目的 so that～may…, in order that～may
～するために [書]
He works hard so that he may* support his family. 家族を維持するために一生懸命働く。
I left the room in order that she might* concentrate. [(*)can=ナチュラル]
彼女が専心できるように私は部屋を出た。
3.6.3 譲歩 「--ever mayたとえ～でも」 複合関係詞の譲歩を表す副詞節の中 [書]
However hard he may work, he will not succeed.
たとえどんなに一生懸命働こうとも、彼は成功しないだろう。
3.7.4 Come what may…「たとえどんなことが～でも」文語的な歌の中に出てくる [書]
Come what may, I’ll be ready. どんなことがあっても、私は覚悟ができている。
