6. 不定詞Ⅵ　その他

6.1 不定詞を否定する副詞の位置はtoの前

6.2    同じ動詞の反復を避けるために、to不定詞のtoだけを用いることがある

6.3    接続詞and, rather than, as, as well as前置詞except, but, likeの前後に不定詞が置かれると後ろの不定詞は原形不定詞になる

6.4    all I do, what I do, what I have to doなどのdoの後はbe動詞＋原形不定詞になる

6.5    原形不定詞の慣用句

6.5.1 had better＋原形不定詞　　～した方がよい　　否定文はhad better not＋原形不定詞

6.5.2 cannot but＋原形不定詞  ～しないではいられない　= cannot help ～ing

6.5.3 make believe ～のふりをする＝pretend　：to-不定詞やthat節が後につづく

6.5.4 　do nothing but＋原形不定詞  ただ～するだけだ、～してばかりいる

6.5.5 would rather＋原形不定詞[＋than＋原形不定詞]  ～するより…する方がよい

6.5.6 Why(not) ＋原形不定詞 ？ ～したら（勧誘, 提案）＝Why don’t you＋原形不定詞 ？

6.5.7 All you have to do [you've got to do] is＋原形不定詞

6.1 不定詞を否定する副詞の位置はtoの前

I got up early so as not to be late for the first train.  始発の列車に乗り遅れないように早く起きた。

She pretended not to hear me.         　彼女は私の言うことが聞こえないふりをした。

I told him not to play pachinko.          彼にパチンコをしないように言った。

I decided never to drink again.           私はもう２度と酒を飲むまいと決心した。

 

6.2    同じ動詞の反復を避けるために、to不定詞のtoだけを用いることがある

You can play here if you want to.         ここで遊びたかったらいていいよ。

You must stay here even if you don’t want to.  

たとえここに居たくないとしても、君はここにいなくてはならない。

I'll lend you some money whenever you want me to. 

お金を貸して欲しい時には、いつでもいくらか貸してあげますよ。

I would like to go with you, but I'm afraid I won't be able to.  

あなた方にお供したいのですが、出来ないのではないかと思います。

 

6.3    接続詞and, rather than, as, as well as前置詞except, but, likeの前後に不定詞が置かれると後ろの不定詞は原形不定詞になる

I'm completely exhausted.  I'd like to lie down and go to sleep.         

私は疲れきった。横になって寝たい。

Do you want to have lunch now or wait for a while?  

今お昼を食べますか。それとも暫らくの間待ちますか。

We had nothing to do except idle away the whole day. 

その日一日、ぶらぶら過ごす以外何もすることがなかった。

※　殆どの場合「to do except＋V」の形になっている。

I'm ready to do anything but work on a farm under the scorching sun.

灼熱の太陽の下、農場で働く以外だったら何をするのもやぶさかではありません。

I think it's easier to do it myself than explain to somebody else how to do it.

そのやり方を誰か他の人に説明するよりは、自分でやった方がより簡単だと思う。

It's as easy to smile as frown.   しかめ面をするのと笑うのは同じ位易しい。

I have to feed our two dogs as well as look after the children.  

子供たちの世話をするばかりでなく、2匹の犬にも餌をやらなくてはならない。

Why don't you do something useful like volunteer at the children’s nursing home?  

児童養護施設でボランティアをするような役に立つことしたら。

Rather than wait for a bus any longer, I decided to go home by taxi.  

これ以上バスを待つより、むしろタクシーで家に帰ることに決めた。

 

6.4    all I do, what I do, what I have to doなどのdoの後はbe動詞＋原形不定詞になる

All I did was poke him a bit.  

私がしたのは彼にちょっとちょっかいを出しただけだ。

What a fire-door does is delay the spread of fire and smoke.  

防火扉のすることは火と煙の広がりを遅らせることだ。

All I've got to do is study hard.      私がしなければならないことは一生懸命勉強することです。

 

6.5    原形不定詞の慣用句

6.5.1 had better＋原形不定詞　　～した方がよい　　否定文はhad better not＋原形不定詞

We had better stay here a little longer.  　私達はもう少しここにいた方がいいよ。

You had better not eat too much.         食べ過ぎない方がいいよ。

※ had better は目上の者が目下の者に使う。主語が2人称だと押し付けがましく聞こえる。

6.5.2 cannot but＋原形不定詞  ～しないではいられない　= cannot help ～ing

I couldn't but laugh when I saw the funny sight. 

私はそのおかしな光景を見て、笑わずにはいられなかった。

× I cannot help taking a taxi because of hard rain.

※ 「激しい雨の為に、タクシーに乗らないではいられなかった。」のように、cannot help～ingやcannot　but～を「物事の決定や選択」に用いてはならない。

○ I had no choice but to take a taxi because of hard rain. 等とすること。     

6.5.3 make believe ～のふりをする＝pretend　：to-不定詞やthat節が後につづく

He made believe not to be connected to a crime syndicate. 彼は暴力団とは関係が無いようなふりをした

6.5.4 　do nothing but＋原形不定詞  ただ～するだけだ、～してばかりいる

He did nothing but play tennis during this summer.  彼は今年の夏の間テニスばかりしていた。

6.5.5 would rather＋原形不定詞[＋than＋原形不定詞]  ～するより…する方がよい　　               

I would rather die than do such an illegal act.

私はそんな不法行為をするくらいなら死んだ方がいい。

6.5.6 Why(not) ＋原形不定詞 ？ ～したら（勧誘, 提案）＝Why don’t you＋原形不定詞 ？

Why not give her some orchids?   彼女にランをあげたら。

Why bother with it?              放っといたら。《くだけた表現》

6.5.7 All you have to do [you've got to do] is＋原形不定詞

※ All you have to do is polish the floor to welcome your friends. 

=All you've got to do is (to) polish the floor to welcome your friends.

≒ You have only to polish the floor to welcome your friends.　　

あなたがしなければならないことは、あなたの友達を歓迎する為に床を磨くことです。
