Who on earth is that strange girl? いったいあの変な子はだれだい。

いったいどうやって君はあんな難しい試験に合格したの。
Who in the world is she? いったい彼女はなにものだ。
但し、長めの疑問詞(ex. How long ~?)にはon earth, etc.
※下の表現は、使わないほうがよい。
Why the hell did I marry you? いったいどうしてお前と結婚したんだろう。
What the fuck is she talking about? いったい彼女は何について話しているんだろう。

彼女がどうやって拳銃を税関を通過させたか私たちには決して分からなかった。
5.3 修辞疑問
必ずしも答を求めるのではなく、注意を引きつけるために、疑問文の形を使う疑問のこと
反語的なことが多い
5.3.1 肯定の疑問文：意味は否定
Who cares? (= Nobody cares.) 誰が気にするの。→誰も気にしないよ。
What’s the use of asking her? (=It’s no use asking her.)
彼女に聞くなんて何なの。→彼女に聞いても無駄さ。
How do you expect me to find milk on a Sunday night?
Where am I going to find a shop open?
(You can’t reasonably expect me to find milk on a Sunday night. There aren’t any shops open.)
日曜の夜にどうやって牛乳を探せっていうのよ。どこに開いている店があるっていうのよ。
5.3.2 否定の疑問文：意味は肯定
Who doesn’t love her? (= Everybody loves her.) 誰が彼女を愛さないというのか。
→みんな彼女を愛しているよ。
5.3.3 その他
Do you know what time it is? (= You are late.) 何時だか分かってるの。
Who’s a lovely baby? (= You’re a lovely baby.) かわいい赤ちゃんは誰でしょう。
’I can’t find my coat.’ ‘What’s this, then?’ (Here it is, stupid.)
「私のコートが見つからない。」「それじゃ、これは何よ。」

5.4.1 短い疑問詞を使った疑問文
肯定の陳述について、更なる情報を求める時に使う。
’Anne’s leaving her job.’ ‘When?’ 「アンは仕事やめるよ。」 「いつ。」
’I’m going out.’ ‘Who with?’ 「私は出かけるよ。」 「誰と。」
’The boss wants to see you.’ ‘What for?’ 「ボスが会いたがっているよ。」 「なんで。」
’Could you send this off for me?’ ‘Where to? (To where?)’
「これを私のために送ってくれませんか。」「どこへ。」
’Can you talk to Tom this afternoon?’ ‘Why me?’
「君、午後トムと話せるかな。」「何故わたしなの。」
’The buses aren’t running.’ ‘Why not?’ 「バスが走ってないよ。」「何故なの。」否定文の時はWhy not
‘I like beer.’ ‘Why?’ 「私ビールが好きよ。」「何故。」 肯定文の時はWhy
5.4.2 聞こえない時に聞こえない部分を疑問詞にして繰り返す
‘Just take a look at that.’ ‘Take a look at what?’
「ちょっとあれを見て。」「何を見てだって。」
’She’s invited thirteen people to dinner.’ ‘She’s invited how many?’
「彼女食事に１３人招待したよ。」 「彼女何人招待したって。」
‘We’re going to Kyoto on holiday.’ ‘You’re going where?’
「私たち休みに京都に行く予定です。」 「君たちどこに行くって。」
‘I’ve broken the thermometer.’ ‘You’ve broken the what?’
「私、温度計こわしちゃった。」 「君が何をこわしたって。」
‘She set fire to the garage.’ ‘She did what (to the garage)?’
「彼女ガレージに火をつけたよ。」 「彼女何したって。」
’Where are you going?’ ‘Where am I going? Home.’
「あなたどこに行くの。」「私がどこに行くかって。家だよ。」
