2.1 過去の能力 couldかbe able toか
2.1.1 couldは「過去のある期間、継続して出来ていたという」能力を表す

2.1.1 couldは「過去のある期間、継続して出来ていたという」能力を表す
She could read when she was four. 彼女は４歳で本を読むことができた。
He could speak Chinese when he was in China, but he can’t now.
彼は中国にいたとき中国語が話せたが、今はできません。
2.1.2 知覚動詞
[see, hear, taste, feel, smell]やunderstand、remember、guessが伴われるときcouldを使う
We could hear the strange sound in the next room. 隣の部屋で変な音が聞こえた。
We could see the beautiful sunshine from our bed room.
I could understand everything she said. 彼女が言う事すべて理解できた。
2.1.3 否定 not, hardly, onlyを伴う
I could only get six eggs. たったの６個しか卵を買えなかった。
She could hardly believe her eyes. 彼女はほとんど目を疑った。
2.1.4 that節の中のcould
I’m so glad that you could come. あなたが来られてとてもうれしい。
2.1.5 was[were] able toは「過去の一回だけの成功」を表すのに使う。
または、managed, succeed を使うのが普通。
She was able to find a job in New York after graduating.
彼女は卒業後N.Y.で仕事を見つけることができた。
I was able to get some sleep on the plane. 飛行機では少し寝ることができた。
I managed to find a really nice dress in the sale.
私は、セールでとてもすてきなドレスを見つけることができた。
After six hours' climbing, we succeeded in getting to the top of the mountain.
６時間登ったあと、頂上にたどり着くことに成功した。
2.1.6 couldn’t
「過去の継続していた能力」も「過去の一回だけの成功」の否定の両方に使える
She couldn't find a job after graduating. 彼女は卒業後、仕事を見つけることができませんでした。I couldn't[wasn’t able to] sleep during the flight. 飛行機の中では寝られませんでした。
2.2 能力以外のcould
2.2.1 現在の弱い推量
1-4 でcanは、疑問文と否定文において、推量を表したが、肯定文にはつかえなかった。
肯定文での推量は、could/may/mightが使われる。might>may>could の順に確実性が強い。
“Where’s Lily?” “She could be at Joe’s place.”
「リリーはどこかな」「彼女は、ジョーのところかもしれません。」
Who could bear to see such a sight? [堅] 誰がそんな光景を直視できるだろうか。 [現在の推定]
違いに注意
It can be very cold in Stockholm, so take a big coat.
ストックホルムはとても寒い可能性があるから、暑いコートを持参しなさい。
It could/may/might be very cold in Stockholm, so take a big coat.
ストックホルムはひょっとして寒いかもしれないから、暑いコートを持参しなさい。
2.2.2 提案
I could post that letter for you if you’re busy.
忙しいのなら、手紙を代わりに投函しておきますが。
2.2.3 非難
How could you use such a rude word? よくもそんな汚い言葉を使えるね。
「～ぐらいしてもいいのに」
He could at least say goodbye to me. さよならぐらい言ってくれればよかったのに。
遺憾な気持ちに加え、過去の行為に対する批判の意も含む。
I couldn't possibly come up with a better plan. [堅]これ以上の案はとうてい考えられそうもない。
You could stay and look after things. 残ってめんどうをみてあげてもよろしいでしょうに。
2.2.4 過去の可能性 「ありえた」
He could be very sarcastic when he got angry.
腹を立てると、彼はとても嫌味な人になることがあった。
～したらどうなんだ（非難・叱責の気持ちが加わる）
2.3 婉曲・控えめ・丁寧な表現
時制を下げることによって、時間的な距離が離れ、直接的でない婉曲な表現となる。仮定法とも言える。
2.3.1 婉曲表現 [依頼] Can you[I]～？より丁寧に依頼
Could you do me a favor? ちょっとお願いできますでしょうか？
Could I have some more cookies? クッキーをもっといだだけますか？
2.3.2 控えめな提案 I [We] could …「（なんなら）…してもよいですよ；…してはどうでしょう」
I could do that for you. 私はそれを代わりにできますよ。
We could try asking him. 彼に頼んでみてはどうでしょう。
2.3.3 軽い命令 You could…「（よかったら）…して下さい」
You could start by filing these letters for me.
手始めに私の代わりにこの手紙をファイルしてください。
2.3.4 リクエスト
Could you just shut up for a minute? （親が子供に）しばらく黙ってくれない。
2.3.5 間接的に望みを表す
A: Are you hungry? B: I could eat something. A: あなたおなかすいていますか。
2.4 仮定法過去完了 could have p.p.
2.4.1 過去の推量 ～出来ただろうに； 〜をすることができたのにやらなかったことを表現
You were lucky. You could have gotten lost.
君は幸運だった。迷子になっていたかもしれないよ
→もし、幸運でなかったら迷子になっていたかもしれないよ。
He could have done it, but he didn't try.
その気になればできたはずなのに、彼はやろうとしなかった。
I could have gone to university in Tokyo, but I chose Kyoto instead.
私は東京の大学へ入れることになったのに、結局京都の大学にした。
She could have stayed in London for another year, but she was too homesick.
彼女はもう一年ロンドンに残ることができたのに、ホームシックしすぎて、、、
He could have taken a job as a manager, but he turned it down to pursue his dream.
彼はマネジャーとしてのしごとを提供されたが、自分の夢を掴まえるために断った。
2.4.2 否定の過去の推量 ～出来なかっただろう
He sang the song very well last night. He could not have sung it better.
彼は昨晩とても上手に歌った。 それ以上うまくは歌えなかっただろう。
I couldn’t have done it without you.
あなたのお陰なければ、とてもできなかったです。
Don’t feel guilty; you couldn’t have done anything to stop it.
罪悪感を覚えないで。だって、何をやってくれても止められなかっただろう。
They couldn’t have been more welcoming. We had a lovely time.
彼らのおもてなしに超したものがない。私たちが本当に楽しかった。
2.4.3 過去の行為への批判 ～してくれてもよかったのに（やろうと思えば…できただろうに）
You could have given me some advice. 少しは忠告してくれればよかったのに。
You could have told me. 私に言ってくれてもよかっただろうに。
You could have told me my ex-husband would be attending the party.
私の元の旦那がパーティーに来ると言えばよかったのに
He could have helped me with my heavy bags, instead of just sitting there.
彼は鼻をほじるより、私の重たい荷物を運ぶのができただろうに。
I guess I could have been more helpful, sorry.
もうちょっと手伝ってあげればよかったのに。すみません。
2.4.4 過去の不確実性を表現 〜だったかもしれない
確率は”may / might /can”と比べて同格か下になる
He could have gone to the wrong address.
間違えて違う住所に行ったかもしれない
She could have overheard our conversation yesterday.
我々の話をもしかしてふと耳にしたかもしれない。
They could have phoned my old phone number by mistake.
もしかして私の前の電話番号に電話したかもしれない。
2.4.5 実際に起こらなかったことに対して推測する表現 〜していたかもしれない
He could have crashed his car bending over to pick up his phone while driving.
運転しながら落とした携帯を拾うとして、交通事故に遭っていたかもしれない
You could have given me a heart attack, sneaking in like that in the middle of the night!
こんな夜中でこっそり入ってきて、私は心臓発作を起こされたかもれない。
They should count themselves lucky. They could have lost their jobs over the incident.
運が良かったと思った方がいい。あの件でもしかしてクビになっていたかもしれない。
2.4.6 実現しなかったが、可能性があり得た現状について表現する 今〜しているかもしれない
I could have been a famous actress if my parents hadn’t been so pushy about going to medical school.
親に医学部に入ることを押し付けられなかったら今は有名な女優になっていたかもしれない。
He could have been President right now, but he got caught misusing state funds.
経費を悪用していることがばれなかったら、今は大統領になっていたかもしれない
We could have been relaxing in Okinawa right now, but you just had to choose the adventure holiday…
今沖縄でのんびりしていることができたのに、あなたはどうしてもアドベンチャーパッケージにしなきゃいけなかったから。
