他動詞が再帰代名詞を目的語として、自動詞的な意味になる動詞を再帰動詞という。

① Please help yourself to some cake. どうそケーキをご自由にお取りください。
② She applied herself to learning English. 彼女は英語の勉強に専念した。
③ History repeats itself. 歴史は繰り返す。
④ She found herself in front of the shop. 彼女は気づいたら店の前にいた。
⑤ Please make yourself at home. どうぞおくつろぎ下さい。
⑥ I can't make myself understood in English. 私は英語で通じらせない
⑦ The baby cried itself to sleep. 赤ん坊は泣いているうちに寝入った。
3.7.2 前置詞＋再帰代名詞
⑧ (all) by oneself (=alone) 一人で = ( all ) on one’s own
The widow lives all by herself (on her own). その未亡人は一人で住んでいる。
⑨ for oneself 自分で、独力で = ( all ) on one’s own
He went into business for himself (on his own). 彼は独力で事業を始めた。
⑩ in itself 本来、それ自体
Gambling is not sinful in itself. 賭博は本来罪深いことではない。
