3.1 the + 比較級（～）+ of the two 「2者のうちでは…の方が～」

3.6 all (much) the + 比較級 + because (for) 「…であるからなおさら…だ」

3.8 no better ～ than 「…にすぎない、…も同然」→ as good as ～

3.18 比較級を強める語句 :比較級を強めるのにvery/quite/tooは使えない
3.18.1 much, far, by far, far and away; 【口語】a lot, lots
3.18.2 still（なお一層）, a good deal, a great deal（かなり）,
3.18.3 many more＋複数名詞[可算名詞], much more＋不可算名詞 「ずっと多くの～」
3.19 比較級を使わないがthanを使う表現
3.19.1 would rather～than…「…よりむしろ～したい」（仮定法参照）
3.19.2 other than～～とは別の[に]、～とは異なる、～以外の[に] （形容詞句・副詞句）
3.19.3 rather…than~、…rather than~ 「～というよりむしろ…」 （2-3参照）
3.20 接続詞 No sooner had S p.p. ~ than …「～するやいなや…」 3.1 the + 比較級（～）+ of the two 「2者のうちでは…の方が～」
この場合、比較級にtheがつくことに注意。
Tom is the taller of the two boys. その２人の少年のうちではトムの方が背は高い。
Of the two boys Tom is the taller.
※ <the + 最上級 + of the two> (口語)
3.2 絶対比較級
「AはBより若い」などのように、相対的に他とはっきり比較するのではなく、単に「漠然と程度の高いこと」を表す比較級を絶対比較級という。普通きまった言い方にだけ用いられることに注意。
The younger generation today needs higher education. 今の若い世代には高等教育が必要である。
the upper [higher] class(es) 上流階級
the greater[better] part of my life 私の人生の大部分
the lower animals 下等動物 the higher animals 高等動物
3.3 the + 比較級、the + 比較級「…すればするほどますます」
この構文では、前のtheは「…だけ」(in the degree in which) の意味を表す関係副詞、後のtheは「それだけ」(to that degree)の意味を表す指示副詞である。
The more we have, the more we want. 持てばもつほどそれだけますます欲しくなる
The sooner (you do it), the better (it will be). 早くやればやるほど、それだけよい。
3.4 the + 比較級
この構文は「…だから、それだけよけい～だ」の意味を表すことがある。この場合のthe は３－３に説いたthe～, the～の後のtheと同じく指示副詞である。
You will be the better for a little rest. 休めばそれだけよけい元気になるだろう。
3.5 比較級 ＋ 比較級「ますます」の意味を表す。
It is getting warmer and warmer. だんだん暖かくなってきます。
Mathematics is getting more and more difficult. 数学はだんだん難しくなってきています。
3.6 all (much) the + 比較級 + because (for) 「…であるからなおさら…だ」
He is loved all the more because he has some faults.彼は欠点があるのでそれだけ人に愛される。
= He is loved all the more for some faults.
3.7 none the + 比較級 + because ( for ) 「（～だからといって）それだけ…ということはない。」
Man is none the happier for his wealth. 人は金があってもそれだけ幸福というわけではない。
= Man is none the happier because he is wealthy.
He was none the wiser for the failure. 彼はその失敗にもかかわらず少しも賢くはならなかった。
none the less 「それでもやはり」二重否定（lessは「少しも～でない」、noneは否定）
I love him none the less for his faults. 欠点はあるけれどやはり彼が好きです。
none the worse for ～ 「…だからといって一向に悪くなくて」
A good book is none the worse for being read again.
よい本は再び読まれたからと言って悪くなることはない。
3.8 no better ～ than 「…にすぎない、…も同然」→ as good as ～
little better ～ than 「…にすぎない、…も同然」
He is no better than a beggar. 彼はこじき同然だ。
3.9 much [still] more … 「まして…はなおさらだ」 （肯定文）
much [still] less … 「まして…はなおさら～ない」 （否定文）
It is difficult to understand his books, much more his lectures.
彼の著書を理解するのは難しい、まして彼の講義となるとなおさらだ。
The baby can’t even walk, much less run.
その赤ちゃんは歩くことさえできない、ましてや走るなんて出きっこしない。
3.10 sooner or later 「遅かれ早かれ」
Sooner or later things will all come right again.
遅かれ早かれ、事態はみな元通りにうまくおさまるだろう。
3.11 more or less 「多かれ少なかれ；ほぼ」
He was more or less drunk. 彼は多かれ少なかれ酔っぱらっていた。
3.12 neither more nor less 「まさに；～にすぎない」
I have neither more nor less than one thousand yen. 私は千円しか持っていない。
3.13 know better than to do 「～するほどおろかでない」toは不定詞
She knows better than to spend all her money on clothes.
彼女は有り金全部を衣服に使うほどおろかでない。
3.14 what is more 「さらによいことには、おまけに、その上に」
what is worse 「さらに悪いことには」
= to make matters worse
She is beautiful, what is more, clever. 彼女はきれいで、その上にかしこい。
It was cold, and what was worse, it began to rain. 寒かった。おまけに雨が降り出した。
3.15 no longer(=not --- any longer) 「もはや…ない」[期間]
He still has long hair, but he no longer has a beard.
= doesn’t have a beard any longer
彼は依然として長髪だが、もはや、あごひげはたくわえていない。
3.16 no more (=not --- any more) 「もう…ない」[程度]
I will trouble you no more. = I won’t trouble you anymore.もうあなたにご迷惑はかけません。
3.17 more than… 「…以上」
less than… 「決して…でなく；未満の、…より少ない」
More than ten students came to class late. 10人以上の生徒がクラスに遅れて来た。
It will cost you less than 1,500 yen to have the flat tire fixed.
そのタイヤのパンクを直してもらうのに1,500円もかからないだろう。
The job is less than perfect. その仕事は決して完全とは言えない。
The heat is more than I can bear. この暑さに私は耐えられません。
3.18 比較級を強める語句 :比較級を強めるのにvery/quite/tooは使えない
3.18.1 much, far, by far, far and away; 【口語】a lot, lots
Jet planes fly much faster than propeller planes. ジェット機はプロペラ機よりかなり速く飛ぶ
This is by far the better of the two. ２つのうちでは、これがずっとよい。
3.18.2 still（なお一層）, a good deal, a great deal（かなり）,
somewhat, rather（やや）; a bit, a little bit（少し）
Your argument was somewhat more persuasive than his.
君の議論のほうが彼のよりいくらか説得力があった。
3.18.3 many more＋複数名詞[可算名詞], much more＋不可算名詞 「ずっと多くの～」
There were many more applicants than the job openings.
その仕事の欠員数よりずっと多くの応募者がいた。
You’ll need much[some] more money to rent such a house.
そんな家を借りるとずっと[いくらか]多くのお金がかかるよ。
※～つ多くのone more～, two more～s, some more～s
「１つ多くの～、２つ多くの～、若干多くの～」
I need five more eggs to cook the cake. そのケーキを作るのにはもう５個多くの卵が必要だ。
3.19 比較級を使わないがthanを使う表現
3.19.1 would rather～than…「…よりむしろ～したい」（仮定法参照）
I would rather stay at home than go with him. 彼と外出するより、家にいたい。
= I prefer staying at home to going with him.
= I prefer to stay at home rather than go with him.
3.19.2 other than～～とは別の[に]、～とは異なる、～以外の[に] （形容詞句・副詞句）
I had expected something other than this. これとは別のもの[状態]を予想していた。
He has no other shoes than what he’s wearing. 彼は今履いているの以外は靴を持っていない。
He could not do other than speak out. = He had no choice but to speak out.
彼は本音を言うより仕方がなかった。
3.19.3 rather…than~、…rather than~ 「～というよりむしろ…」 （2-3参照）
I’ll go to the sea rather than to the mountain. 山よりむしろ海に行く。
She is a singer rather than an actor. 彼女は女優と言うより歌手だ。
3.20 接続詞 No sooner had S p.p. ~ than …/No sooner did S 原型 than 「～するやいなや…」
No sooner had I entered the room than he ran away. 私が部屋に入るや否や彼は逃げた。
=No sooner did I enter the room than he ran away.
