6.2 最上級と定冠詞
6.2.1 形容詞の最上級にtheをつけない場合
6.2.2 名詞を修飾する形容詞の最上級は必ずtheがつく
6.2.3 一般に叙述用法の形容詞の最上級にはtheがつかないことが多いが、次に名詞が略されていることが明らかな場合にはtheをつける。

三者以上のものの中で最もすぐれていることを表すには最上級の形を用いる。
He is the tallest boy in his class. 彼はクラスの中で一番背が高い。
He studies the most diligently of us all. 彼は我々全員の中で一番まじめに勉強する。
※ 最上級の後に「in単数」「of複数」

This is the most exciting movie (that) I have ever seen.
これは私が今まで見た中で一番おもしろい映画です。
6.1.3 one of the 最上級＋複数形 「最も～な一人（一つ）」
He is one of the greatest pianists that Japan has ever produced.
彼は日本が生み出した最も偉大なピアニストの一人です。
6.2 最上級と定冠詞
6.2.1 形容詞の最上級にtheをつけない場合
同一の人[物事]についての比較で、「補語」になる場合はtheをつけないのが原則。
This lake is deepest at this point. この湖はここが一番深い。
In England roses are most beautiful in May. 英国ではバラは5月が一番美しい。
She is happiest when she is with her boyfriend. 彼女は恋人といるときが一番幸せだ。
6.2.2 名詞を修飾する形容詞の最上級は必ずtheがつく
This is the most famous temple in Japan. これは日本で一番有名な寺です。
6.2.3 一般に叙述用法の形容詞の最上級にはtheがつかないことが多いが、次に名詞が略されていることが明らかな場合にはtheをつける。
He is the tallest of the three. 彼は3人の中では一番背が高い。
His failure is plainest. 彼の失敗は明白だ。
6.2.4 副詞の最上級にはtheをつけないこともある。of[in]が続く時は必ずつける。
Which do you like the best of these movies? これらの映画の中でどれが一番好きですか。
Who runs fastest? 誰が一番速く走りますか。
6.3 譲歩の最上級
最上級は時にeven （…でさえも）の意味を表すことがある。
The cleverest boy in the class could not answer it.
クラスで一番利口な少年でさえもそれに答えられなかった。
6.4 most, a most, the mostの注意
6.4.1 most＋複数名詞 = (the great majority of ～)たいていの
Most young men are fond of outdoor sports. たいていの青年は屋外のスポーツが好きだ。
重要：Most of となるときは次の名詞に限定する語 the, this, these, his, etc.がつく
Most of the boys like football. その少年のほとんどはフットボールが好きだ。
6.4.2 a most = (very, extremely) たいそう…の
a most＋原級＋単数名詞、most＋原級＋複数名詞
ふつうは-estをつけて最上級をつくる形容詞もmostを用いて最上級を作る。意味はveryと同じだが、very
よりも堅い言い方になる。
She is a most (=very) pretty girl. 彼女はたいそう愛らしい子です。
They were most (=very) pleasant people. 彼らはとても感じのよい人たちだった。
副詞の場合：ふつうの最上級にもtheがつかないので文脈で判断する。
He behaved most(=very) carefully. 彼はとても慎重にふるまった。
6.4.3 the most = (最上級) 一番…の
He is the most famous of all Japanese dramatists.
かれは日本の劇作家の中で最も有名です。
6.5 最上級を強める語
6.5.1 imaginable, conceivable（想像できる）, possible, thinkable
It’s the most beautiful landscape imaginable. = It’s the most beautiful imaginable landscape.
それは想像できる最も美しい風景です。
6.5.2 very, by far, far and away, quite, easily, the absolute
This is the very best choice you will ever have. これは、あなたがこれからするだろうまさに一番の選択です。
By far[far and away] the biggest island in Scilly is St Mary’s.
シリーでずば抜けて一番大きな島は、セントメリー島です。
It was quite the most significant event in recent Greek history.
最近のギリシャの歴史で極めて一番重要な出来事だった。
They were easily the best vegetable in the competition.それらはコンテストで確かに最上の野菜だった。
It was the absolute biggest ice cream I’d ever seen.それは今まで見た中で完全に一番大きなアイスクリームだった。
