5. 原級の基本用法
5.1 原級比較の形式
5.1.1 肯定形：二者が同程度であることを表すにはas＋原級＋as（～と同じくらい）の形を用いる。
5.1.2 否定形：二者の比較で一方が他方よりも劣る場合にはnot so+原級+as, またはless+原級+thanの形を用いる（～ほど…でない）
5.1.3 後ろのas以下の省略形
5.1.4 the same ~ asを使って、原級比較に変える
5.2 比較対象（比較２－５参照）
5.3 倍数表現 「Ａ is＋倍数詞＋as～as Ｂ」
5.3.1 ～倍twice, three(four, etc.) times as+ 原級 + as～で表す。
5.3.2 ～分の１ 「Ａ is ＋分数＋as～as Ｂ」
5.3.3 ～の１．５倍「half as … again as～」
5.3.4 as～asの間に名詞が入る場合
5.3.5 ほとんど同じ「almost, nearly, (just) aboutをas～asの前につける」
5.3.6 まったく同じ「exactly, justをas～asの前につける」
5.3.7 as～asによらない倍数表現 5.1 原級比較の形式

He is as clever as you. 彼は君と同じくらい利口です。
This book is as thick as that one. この本はあの本と同じくらい厚い。
5.1.2 否定形：二者の比較で一方が他方よりも劣る場合にはnot so+原級+as, またはless+原級+thanの形を用いる（～ほど…でない）
He is not so clever as I. = He is less clever than I. 彼は私ほど利口でない。
※ アメリカの用法では「not so ～as…」では間違いで、「not as ～as…」を使う。
5.1.3 後ろのas以下の省略形
My son is as young as you (are). 私の息子は君と同じくらい若い。
There are not as many trees here as (there were) four years ago.
ここには4年前ほど木がない。
He was not as bad as (had been) expected. 彼は予想していた程ひどくなかった。
5.1.4 the same ~ asを使って、原級比較に変える
He does the same job as me. 彼は私と同じ仕事をしている。
The girls are taught by the same teacher (as each other).
彼女たちは同じ先生に教えられている。
5.2 比較対象（比較２－５参照）
日本語ではあいまいになることがあるが、英語では比較の対象を正確に表さなければいけない。
× The population of London is as large as this city.
○ The population of London is as large as that of this city. ロンドンの人口はこの町と同じだ。
5.3 倍数表現 「Ａ is＋倍数詞＋as～as Ｂ」
5.3.1 ～倍twice, three(four, etc.) times as+ 原級 + as～で表す。
※ twice(米：two times) 2倍、3倍以上はthree,(four) timesのように表す。
I have twice as many books as you have. 私は本を君の2倍持っている。
= You have half as many books as I have. あなたは私の半分の本を持っている。
The bridge is three times as long as the breadth of this river.
その橋はその川幅の三倍の長さだ。
5.3.2 ～分の１ 「Ａ is ＋分数＋as～as Ｂ」
The population of Spain is about one third as large as that of Japan.
スペインの人口は日本の人口の約３分の１である。
5.3.3 ～の１．５倍「half as … again as～」
He is half as tall again as I. 彼は私の1.5倍の背の高さだ。
5.3.4 as～asの間に名詞が入る場合
① as many [much] 名詞 as
He has three times as many books as you. 彼はあなたの３倍の本を持っている。
He earns five times as much money as you. 彼はあなたの５倍の稼ぎがある。
② as 形容詞＋a [an] ＋名詞 as 冠詞の位置に注意
He is as good a cook as you. 彼はあなたと同じくらい料理がうまい。
5.3.5 ほとんど同じ「almost, nearly, (just) aboutをas～asの前につける」
I have almost as many books as you have. 私はあなたとほぼ同じ位の本を持っている。
5.3.6 まったく同じ「exactly, justをas～asの前につける」
I have almost as many books as you have. 私はあなたとほぼ同じ位の本を持っている。
5.3.7 as～asによらない倍数表現
twice (three times...) the number (amount, size, length) of Aの形でも表現できる。
This bridge is three times the length of that one. この橋はあの橋の３倍の長さだ。
= This bridge is three times as long as that one.
～times as many…as = ～times the number of
～times as large as = ～times the amount[size] of
参考：～times + 比較級 + than の構文は、誇張表現で使う。
She is a hundred times prettier than you. 彼女は君の１００倍かわいいよ。
5.4 直喩
as busy as a bee(beaver) とても忙しい
as cool as a cucumber 極めて冷静な
as cunning as a fox とてもずるい
as dead as a doornail 完全に死んでしまって
as dry as dust 無味乾燥の
as gay as a lark とても陽気な
as alike as two peas うり二つで
as old as Adam すごく年取った
as poor as a church mouse とても貧しい
as proud as a peacock 非常に自尊心の高い
as sweet as honey すごく甘い
as thick as a plank とても頭が鈍い
as timid as a mouse ひどく臆病な
as wise as Solomon とても賢い
as white as a ghost ひどく白い
